Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and stress has been identified as a significant contributor to the development and exacerbation of high blood pressure. In Katsina State, like in many parts of Nigeria, factors such as high levels of work and life-related stress, coupled with poor lifestyle habits, contribute to the rising prevalence of hypertension. The psychological and physiological impacts of stress, including the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the release of stress hormones, have been shown to increase blood pressure levels. This study will examine the role of stress in the development of hypertension in Katsina State, exploring both occupational and non-occupational stressors and their impact on the health of the population.
Hypertension remains a critical health issue in Katsina State, with high levels of undiagnosed and uncontrolled cases. Although lifestyle factors such as diet and physical inactivity are well-documented risk factors, the role of stress in hypertension development is often overlooked. The increasing demands of modern life, coupled with socio-economic pressures and work-related stress, may contribute to the growing prevalence of hypertension in Katsina State. This study aims to investigate the relationship between stress and hypertension, providing valuable insights into the role of stress in the development of high blood pressure.
The study will focus on adults in Katsina State, with particular attention to both urban and rural populations. Limitations include the difficulty in quantifying stress levels and the challenge of isolating stress as the sole factor contributing to hypertension, given the presence of other risk factors.
